This ATODI Jazz syllabus is enjoyable and energetic, yet beneficial to the body. It not only boosts health benefits, it inculcates discipline, co-ordination and appreciation for the arts.
The curriculum consists of fun steps that will wake up your feet. Classes include moves that will enhance students' sense of rhythm, body grooves and dance style.
There is no age limit to each level and students are able to attend classes according to their ability with or without dance background. Parents are therefore are welcomed to enroll in the classes with their children.
Test 1 (For children age 4 and above)
This level incorporates basic steps that will build the foundation of Jazz in the child. Pace is slow so that students can grasp the fundamental elements of dance better.
An example of what students will learn is the 4 basic positions of the feet, namely, 'First parallel', 'First turn-out', 'Second parallel' and 'Second turn-out'. These 4 positions are important as it is used all the way through the various levels.
Test 2 (For young children age 7 and above, adults without dance background)
This level is slightly more challenging than Test 1, as the exercises in this level are more comprehensive and conducted at a slightly faster pace. Some exercises are repeated from Test 1 but done at a faster tempo. Positions of the arms and co-ordination of both arms and legs will be done more elaborately as well.
Test 3 - (For teenagers age 9 and above, adults without background in dance)
This level concentrates more on technique, so as to prepare students for the Bronze levels.
Exercises start to comprise of turns and travelling steps, unlike test 1 and 2, whereby the movements are mostly stationary.
Bronze Series - For teenagers, adults with little background in dance
This level provides a more thorough training that focuses on strengthening basic techniques, such as kicks, isolation of the body, and floor exercises.
The dance routines for this series are slightly over a minute long, but consist of more traveling steps thereby ensuring a full body workout for the student.
Silver Series - For teenagers, adults with considerable background in dance
This level trains students to accomplish more interesting and demanding moves at a fast pace
Classes will entail several elements: combination of travelling steps, turning, elevation, isolation of each part of the body, etc.
Dance routine is much longer than the previous levels, inclusive of steps ranging from Test 1 all the way down to Silver Medal.
Gold Series - For independent teenagers/adults with commendable technique and considerable experience
This level requires quick reflexes as the exercises are fast paced, and involves a certain level of flexibility and strength. Complex dance moves are taught and students will experience a more intense and vigorous workout.
Two 1.5min dances (1 slow tempo and 1 fast tempo) are compulsory for the exam, with the dancer's own choreography and choice of music.
